CUMMING - Gainesville girls tennis moved to 3-1 in 2025 Tuesday with a 4-1 win over Forsyth Central.
Fresh off a loss to North Hall Monday, the Red Elephants showed early signs of the confidence stagger that can come with falling to a rival as both Lillian DeCook, playing at No. 2 singles, and Penn Willis, playing No. 3 singles lost their first sets 1-6 and 3-6 respectively.
As the pendulum always does, however, it swung opposite its initial direction and when it did, the dominant play shown in the seasons wins over Cherokee Bluff and Habersham in which Gainesville's singles players went 6-0 took over.
DeCook won the final two sets of her match 6-3, 10-4 while Willis prevailed 6-3, 11-9 in the final two sets of her match to send Gainesville home with win No. 4.
Kyndal Cohen, playing at No. 1 singles, remained not only unbeaten, but unchallenged as she won in straight sets (6-0, 6-3). Cohen not only hasn't dropped a match, but she hasn't lost a set thus far, including in Monday's team loss. And if those items of interest don't prove her dominance, in four matches this season, eight sets total, Cohen's opponents have only scored nine points.
In doubles action, the team of Mercy Rico and Kate Willis also picked up a three-set victory (7-5, 6-7, 10-4).
Gainesville tennis begins region play today as the Red Elephants host Milton; start time 4:00 p.m.
