GAINESVILLE - Gainesville football welcomed scrimmage foe McEachern to City Park on Friday night in stomping good fashion: out-passing, out-rushing, out-sacking, and out-kicking the Indians en route to outscoring scoring them 23-7 by the final horn.
The Red Elephants put up 412 yards of total offense to McEachern's 198 due in large part to the passing game.
Starting quarterback Kharim Hughley threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns in the first half while backups Rex Greene and Cooper Papka spent the second half combining to go 7-of-10 passing for 116 yards. Fourteen different Big Red receivers caught passes from the trio led by senior Philip Williams four catches for 85 yards and two scores.
Gainesville's defense gave up just 66 yards rushing and nearly recorded a shutout by shutting down almost anything the Indians attempted. McEachern did manage 198 yards passing with 70 of those yards coming on the team's third-quarter touchdown.
All told, Big Red picked up three sacks (Xavier Griffin, Zachary Ingram, and Malachi Russell) as part of 12 tackles for loss and turned the Indians over twice with Roger Holder recording an interception and Darryn Williams recovering a fumble forced by Elijah Watson.
The Red Elephants return to action on Aug. 15 as they open up the regular season against Marietta on Bobby Gruhn Field, the first of seven home games in 2025.
