GAINESVILLE - Red Elephant softball picked up this week right where it left off last week, and in doing so earned a second region win for the first time since 2019.

Using the momentum gained during a mercy-rule shortened 13-run victory over in-county foe West Hall Sept. 11, Gainesville beat Cedar Shoals 14-2 (4 inn.) Monday before playing to a sweep of Region 7-5A opponent Chattahoochee on Tuesday, beating the Cougars 22-10 (4 inn.).

Playing at home, Red (7-5, 2-5) had to rally big for region win No. 2 coming from behind in each of the first three innings. Gainesville evened the score at one in the bottom of the first, took a 6-5 lead in the second, and after the Cougars scored four runs in the third to take a three-run lead, scored eight runs to take a lead it would relinquish in the third at 14-10.

In the bottom of the final inning, Layanna Promise (pictured left) got the game-winning, three-run triple and Nashya Barnett (pictured right) scored the run that put the Red Elephants up 12 and ended the game.

Promise finished the night 2-for-4 from the plate with a single on top of her game-deciding heroics. Mayleigh Gonzalez was a perfect 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and five RBI. Maya Silva was 2-for-2 with two singles, two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks; and senior Finley O'Callaghan hit an inside-the-park, two-run homerun a part of a night in which she batted in three and scored twice.

In Monday's win at home over Cedar Shoals, O'Callaghan was the perfect-at-the-plate performer going 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple as she batted in two and scored twice. O'Callaghan's three hits led the way for a Gainesville team that only had seven total in its 12-run win.

Promise went 2-for-2 Monday with two singles, an RBI and two runs scored; while Janae Garrett and Mariam Trocheck provided the other two hits for Big Red and combined for three RBIs.

Junior pitcher Maya Silva picked up two complete-game wins striking out four while walking just two against Cedar Shoals before following that up with a nine-strikeout performance against the Cougars.

Gainesville continues region play Thursday at Johns Creek; first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
