GAINESVILLE - For the second time in as many weeks Gainesville football scored more than 50 points in a rout.
However, unlike last week's come-from-behind 57-30 win over Lanier in which they were down at halftime, the Red Elephants ended Friday's game against Johns Creek by halftime, scoring 55 points in the first two quarters en route to a 67-0 win.
Led by quarterback Kharim Hughley, who went 10-of-14 for 198 yards and three touchdowns, Big Red (5-1, 2-0 Region 7-5A) blitzed the Gladiators with a balanced offensive attack earning 266 yards in the air and 260 on the ground.
Nigel Newkirk led the way in the run game with four rushes for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Three GHS running backs - Newkirk included - averaged more than 10 yards per carry with Bryce Lyons going for 82 yards on eight carries and PJ Lewis running for 46 on four carries. Both Lyons and Lewis added touchdowns for a Gainesville ground game that had six on the night.
On the receiving end of Hughley's three touchdowns were Cameron James, Colin Luke, and Legend Wilmont (pictured), who also returned a punt 61 yards for a score.
Gainesville's defense held the Gladiators to 21 yards passing, 16 yards rushing, and zero first downs. Big Red's offense on the other hand did not attempt a punt all night.
The Red Elephants will play just their second road game of the season Friday when they travel to Seckinger.
