TOCCOA - Flag football, in its first year as a Gainesville athletics program, not only evened its record to 3-3 with a sweep of Elbert and Stephens counties Wednesday, but earned the programs first wins in area play.
In Game 1, a 27-6 Red Elephant (3-3, 2-0 Area 8 Division 1) stomp, quarterback Shailyn Jones had two rushing and one passing touchdown, the latter coming to Damaria Colburn, who also had two interceptions in the game.
Jones' scoring effort was bolstered by a pick six from Abrielle Brown as part of a five-interception night for Big Red (Colburn had two interceptions, Jaucelyn Smith and Aquila Borders snagged the other two).
Kadence Rucker and Sincere Cleveland each earned two sacks while Shakayla Myers had a sack and three tackles for loss.
After a standout performance in Game 1, Gainesville's defense earned its first shutout of the season in the second game as Big Red bested Stephens County 20-0.
Colburn made it three interceptions on the night in her performance against the Indians and the backfield pressure present in the first game, showed up mightily in Big Red's nightcap as well. Leilani Rosario had a sack as did Kelsey Lester; Rucker and Cleveland each earned their third sacks of the doubleheader while Myers made it seven tackles for loss all told with four against Stephens.
Once again Jones led the way offensively with two rushing scores. Shalonda Myers scored on the ground as well.
Gainesville flag football returns to action Monday at Johns Creek with two out-of-area games against the host Gladiators and North Forsyth.
