SUWANEE - Out of the 34 events held in Gainesville track and field's season-opening meet at Lambert High School, the Red Elephants medaled in half and took gold in 10, marking a fast start to the 2026.
Not only did GHS sweep the 4X200 and 4X800 relays, but stood atop the podium in long jump, pole vault, shot put, and the 100 and 1600-meter races; taking second as well in two of those events.
All told 26 Red Elephant student athletes earned podium places on the day.
In addition to a relay sweep, Gainesville also swept the long jump with seniors Joseph Greer and Jayden Harris placing first and second for the boys while senior Armani Somers took first for the girls.
Big Red also finished first and second in the girls 1600 with senior Arianny Hoyos (pictured) and Vanessa Torres coming in with times of 5:59.84 and 6:00.30 respectively.
Junior Grayson Hartman earned a gold medal in pole vault besting the second-place finisher by two feet while freshman Adarean Swanigan took first in the boys shot.
Gainesville also took gold, and had three of the four top finishers, in the girls 100 as junior Sincere Cleveland ran a time of 12.51; Shalonda Myers and Somers finished third and fourth in the event.
Other Top-4 finishers on the day: Ethan Fountain earned a second-place finish in the boys 1600 (4:49.77) and Samuel Hernandez finished fourth (4:57.37), Ashley Bell ran to second in the boys 110 hurdles, freshman Camryn Cromwell and senior Molly Williams finished second and third in the girls 100 hurdles, Kendrick Holland and Swanigan threw themselves to third- and fourth-place finishes in the discus, Aquila Borders finished two spots behind her teammate Somers in the long jump, Alyssa Murrow took third in the girls pole vault, Aaliyah Stringer earned fourth place in both the discus and the shot put, and senior Jeny Graciano-Luna finished fourth in the 1600.
Track and field returns to action on Feb. 20 in the Big Peach Distance Classic at Parkview High School before competing in the Buford Relays on Feb. 28.
