GAINESVILLE - A common denominator in athletic competition, no matter the sport or level, is the idea that playing the best brings out your best: individually and collectively; regarding both external opponent and internal personnel.
Gainesville baseball currently at 5-10 overall, a misleading representation of both the team's talent and promise but a perfect example of the aforementioned idea. An out-of-region schedule to begin 2026 that included state perennial powerhouse Loganville and a gauntlet of teams with the nation's top talent during a three-day Perfect Game showcase in Hoover, Ala., led to losses sure, but brought out Big Red's best as evidenced by them winning their first two region series against Roswell and Milton en route to a 4-2 Region 7-5A record in the wake of a 1-9 season start.
That best brought out will need to be on full display this week as Gainesville plays its region's top team in a three-game set beginning March 17; two games at Lanier High School, one at Ivey-Watson on March 18.
The Longhorns are 10-4 overall and 7-3 in region with wins over Seckinger, Chattahoochee, and Johns Creek. As it stands Lanier sits atop 7-5A followed by Milton (9-7, 6-3 Region 7-5A); Seckinger, Roswell, and Gainesville have all played one less region series and each sit at 4-2 with Gainesville owning the head-to-head over two teams in the race to the state playoffs.
The Red Elephants are led offensively by by four players hitting over .300: CJ Saudarg (.359), Beckett Brown (.341), Peyton Osheaski (.324), and Cohen Miller (.302). Those four are also tops in on-base percentage averaging out at .451 with Saudarg and Brown leading the way with an OBP at .460.
Saudarg and Brown along with catcher Chase Kiewert and shortstop Dawson Vaughn lead the team in hits with 14 each while Miller and Osheaski have 13 and 12 each. Pitcher and first baseman Miller is the team leader in home runs with 4 while designated hitter Saudarg leads the team in doubles (5). The Red Elephants offense is helped by the cunning basepath speed of leadoff hitter and centerfielder Asher Stephens, who along with pitcher and outfielder Osheaski have five stolen bases. Everyday second baseman and left-handed reliever Brown has four swipes.
On the mound, Daniel Rico has emerged as the team's No. 1 boasting an incredible 26 strikeouts to eight walks in 20 innings pitched. Rico, who is 1-0 in four starts, has given up just 13 hits and four earned runs. Rico's compadres on the starting mound are Miller, who is also 1-0 but through five starts, with 17 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched; and Osheaski, who has 18 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched (four starts).
Silas Ingram heads up the bullpen with 11 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched over nine appearances.
Brown, aforementioned as an offensive standout, heads up Gainesville's defense having committed just one error in 14 starts at second base (he was the starting pitcher once this season for Big Red).
After this week's series against Lanier, Gainesville will play three against Seckinger and Chattahoochee respectively before Spring; the final region series of 2026 will come against Johns Creek the week of April 14.
