GAINESVILLE - Two Red Elephants were among 19 student athletes from Hall County recognized Monday night as the area's best in their respective sport by local media outlet The Times at the entity's annual Athlete of the Year event at the Gainesville Civic Center.
Big Red senior KJ White earned boys basketball athlete of the year, and freshman Addison Peeples was named girls golf athlete of the year.
White, who will graduate from Gainesville High School on May 22 before continuing his education and playing career at Young Harris College, paced Big Red boys basketball to a 30-1 record and Class 5A state semifinals run, averaging 13 points and four assists per game.
Peeples, who's consistently been low medalist and has finished no lower than third in all events in which she's competed this season, set a new girls county record with an 18-hole total of 6-under-par 66 at the Hall County Championships in early March. She also won the West Georgia Ladies Invitational in late March and finished first in Area 2-5A with a 5-under par 67 helping lead her team to a second-place area finish and spot in next week's Class 5A State Girls Golf Tournament in Jekyll Island.
