More than the physical endurance necessary to maintain long enough to finish, running a marathon takes a level of mental toughness that allows one to forget they are just maintaining: mindset is everything.

Gainesville softball opened its season Monday against Chestatee and not only physically endured the four-hour marathon, but showed the level of mental toughness needed to finish the game scoring seven in the bottom of the seventh to earn a walk-off 29-28 win in a back-and-forth race.

Down six in the bottom of the last inning, Irene Sanchez came in off the bench for a pinch-hit RBI single that gave way to Brilee Keppinger's two-RBI double that tied the game at 28. Freshman Layanna Promise scored the winning run a batter later on a Chestatee error.

Seniors Keppinger and Amberly Ayala led the way for the Red Elephants combining for six RBIs and eight runs scored. Keppinger also stole five bases.

Freshman Judea Hawkes (pictured), one of three ninth graders to start for Big Red, got on base eight times, scoring four of those times.

Sophomore Ja'Nae Garrett scored five runs and had six stolen bases, while juniors Kelsey Lester and Finley O'Callaghan each had three RBIs.

Gainesville returns to action Tuesday at Oglethorpe. The Red Elephants play at home Thursday against Flowery Branch, first pitch is set for 5:30.
