Gainesville football scored 33 unanswered points Friday night, 27 in the first 13 minutes of the second half, en route to a season-opening 41-3 rout of Marietta.
The Red Elephants defense held the Blue Devils to 177 total yards and had a blocked field goal. GHS on the other hand compiled 371 total yards led by first-year starter at quarterback Kharim Hughley, two 100-yard receivers, and a 100-yard rusher.
All told, Hughley was 14-of-18 passing for 224 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite targets were Shane King (nine receptions for 127 yards) and Jeremiah Ware (six receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown).
Carmelo Byrd, starting his first game at running back for Gainesville, scampered for 111 yards on 16 carries and had two touchdowns.
Taz Smith (21 yards) and Dacien Cohen (3 yards) also scored touchdowns for Big Red.
Next up, Gainesville travels to Moody, Ala. to take on the Blue Devils in the first game outside of Georgia for the Red Elephants since 1950. The game will be Thursday night Aug. 22, at 8 p.m. ET, 7 p.m. CT.
