Despite finding out on Tuesday that their region game against Johns Creek was to be played the next day due to incoming Hurricane Helene, Gainesville football reigned supreme at Colosseum Stadium.
Led by a defense that held the Gladiators to 58 yards rushing and 10 yards passing, and a wefense that had yet another scoop and score off a blocked punt, the Red Elephants beat Johns Creek 48-0 to remain undefeated in region play.
While Johns Creek was stifled in its 68-total-yards performance, the opposite was true for Gainesville, which piled up 503 total yards thanks in part to sophomore quarterback Kharim Hughley who threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns on 9-of-11 passing.
As part of the seven receivers who caught passes Wednesday night, tight end Brody Stafford had two receiving touchdowns while receiver Shane King had one. Running back Carmelo Byrd had two scores on the ground for Big Red while Taz Smith had a 55-yard score on his lone carry of the night.
The aforementioned scoop and score was by Tripp Jones, he was able to pick it up and run thanks to Demari Cheeks block.
Gainesville returns home and to action for Senior Night Friday night against Seckinger.
