A season of change is afoot for the Gainesville wrestling program; sort of.

Gainesville is coming off a season in which the girls side of the program made history, winning an area title and finishing third in the all-class meet at the state duals competition.

Gone are familiar names associated not just with the Red Elephants, but with success: Sky Niblett, Ailoni Soto, Emely Mejia-Martinez, and 100-match winner who finished as Class 6A runner-up in 2024 Litzy Soto.

The Red Elephants have a new head coach in Tommie Turner who takes over the program from Roberto Rivera, coach since 2019.

It is a season of change, but only aesthetically, as what remains is the same grow-towards-greatness mentality instilled by a former head coach whose top assistant now has the reigns. What remains is the passion for sport, and the want to pass it to others.

Hear more about Turner and the upcoming season in our video preview.

Gainesville wrestling opens the year Saturday at home as it hosts the Gainesville Duals with matches starting at 9:00 a.m.
