Red Elephant wrestling rested the weekend after Thanksgiving, a well-earned break for a program that started the season hosting two tournaments and traveling to one over three busy weeks.

In meet No. 1 of the year, the Gainesville Duals, both the boys and girls teams finished fifth with Claudia Larios Marquez and Mia Trejo earning individual championships.

Hosting a tournament for the second weekend in a row, the Tommie Turner-led program chose a setting out of want that was used out of desperation the week prior: the outdoor practice pavilion on Gainesville’s campus, and the results-in-comment according to attendees, athletes, and coaches alike were outstanding.

Also outstanding, the GHS girls team which took the overall title out of 15 teams, besting the second-place finisher by 46 points. Alicia Rogers, Itel Salcido (pictured), and Ashley Morales all went undefeated on the day. The boys beat Collins Hill and Flowery Branch on a day that ended with them earning a 2-2 record.

Next up was the Sequoyah Duals Invitational on Nov. 23 where the boys took third overall and the girls finished fifth.

The boys edged out former region rival North Forsyth by five-tenths of a point to earn their finish. Rowan Kennedy and Williams Childs won individual titles while Marco Macario, Kharl Nathan, and Emmanuel Isidro each finished in third.

On the girls side, Alicia Rogers and Dulce Tovar-Garcia earned runner-up status on the day while Kimberli Rocha-Trujillo and Amberly Ayala each placed third.

Wrestling returns to action Wednesday in a tri-match at Jefferson before traveling to Huntsville, Ala., for the Huntsville Invitational on Saturday.
