GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville boys basketball team didn't just score its highest point total of the season Friday against Chattahoochee, the Red Elephants also played their most complete game, dominating in all facets of a 78-40 win.
An 8-0 start by the Red Elephants in the game's first two minutes wasn't simply an energetic run by a team playing at home for the first time this season, but a foreshadowing of the dominance the following 30 minutes would hold, such that the game wasn't in question past those first two minutes.
Gainesville exhibited a stifling brand of defense that caused 20 Chattahoochee turnovers and earned Big Red 11 steals. The home team also outrebounded the Cougars by 11, grabbing more than 30 boards.
The nail in the "complete game" descriptive coffin, however, was what the Red Elephants did on offense as 12 of the 13 players on the roster scored.
Charlie Gersmehl led the way for Big Red with 12 points. Xavier Griffin and Sebastian Collins had 10 points each, and Brandon Nelson added nine.
Gainesville takes on Winder-Barrow at home in the On the Radar North Georgia Showcase Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Red Elephants return to region play Tuesday when they host Roswell; tip-off at 7:30.
